215/45 17 Tyre Review Highlights

Yokohama BluEarth Es ES32 rated 84% while driving a Toyota Prius
Driving on a combination of roads for 20 easy going miles
A fuel-economy tyre with great comfort credits. This tyre will never please the boy-racer brigade, but some of us regard that as a bonus. On to my second set of these Blue-Earth after over 160,000 km of daily commute and occasional holiday travel. Quiet, comfortable and reliable. Fuel economy is up there with the very best, with wet braking on par with tyres twice the price. Unsure what "Orange Oil" is, it sounds like something I use to remove glue residue. I think these tyres represent great value and I would very much like to recommend them.

Petlas SnowMaster 2 Sport rated 75% while driving a Skoda Fabia Mk4 1.5 TSI ACT
Driving on a combination of roads for 3000 average miles
I've been using it for 4 months and have driven approximately 5000 km. The majority of this was in the city and on the unpaved road where my workplace is located. The tire performs very well on both dry and wet surfaces, with a good braking distance. I had no issues on snow either. In terms of noise, you can hear the tires at every speed. For me, it was a great price/performance tire, and I can say it has been successful in this regard. If it maintains the same softness next season, I believe it will continue to satisfy me greatly.

Riken Riken Snow rated 87% while driving a Vauxhall Corsa
Driving on mostly country roads for 4000 average miles
got these on a corsa van and they are great in the snow and not noisy on the road, good wear properties for the blocky tread pattern. Bought some more for the rears to replace the verdenstiens which are not as good in the snow.

Vredestein Quatrac Pro Plus rated 80% while driving a Subaru BRZ
Driving on a combination of roads for 250 spirited miles
After 4 years and 33,000 km the excellent Quatrac Pro have hardened and are very close to the legal limit for an AS (4mm). Time and wear have made them wagging, still valid in the wet and very reactive in the dry, but on snow they would have been nothing short of a gamble.

And since I will be going to Germany again in January with the brz and the Quatrac Pro were not available, I recently mounted the Quatrac Pro+ (215/45/17 91Y XL B/C utqg400/A/A).

The Q.Pro+ have a softer carcass and sidewall, are less reactive, have a different compound more oriented to wet/snow and also require more running-in (at least 500 km).

The always very nice design remains unchanged with an appreciable footprint of the tread and the characteristic wide central rib.

At first I optimistically thought I could mount the Q.Pro+ only on the rear, leaving the old Q.Pro on the front which with a generous 5mm could have done another 10,000 km. But all the differences mentioned above are overall so important that, in the few days I rode with the new ones only on the rear, at every minimal change of direction I could perceive a clear oversteer combined with an appreciable lateral instability of the rear (cobblestone sensation, so to speak), practically disappeared, net of the remaining wax to dispose of, once the new ones were mounted on the front as well. I didn't think that the lack of homogeneity between the two axles could be so problematic. It was basically like having a summer tyre on the front and a winter tyre on the rear with the consequences of the case.

I will do a full review around 5000 km.

Toyo Proxes TR1 rated 54% while driving a Vauxhall Corsa D
Driving on mostly country roads for 1000 spirited miles
I ran two of these on one end and michelin PS5s on the other end. Night and day difference. The toyos would fold quite easily under 30psi, i ran mine at around 33psi, they wouldnt grip the same as the PS5s. I experimented putting the toyos on the front and the car understeered. I put them on the back and the car oversteered. So i learnt my lesson not to cheap out on tyres. In conclusion, these tyres and okay but not for your spirited drivers. Hope this helps

Landsail LS588 UHP rated 83% while driving a Skoda Rapid TSI
Driving on a combination of roads for 21000 spirited miles
Purchased these mainly because of the price. I needed 2 new tyres and these were priced well. I had used Landsail LS388 on a previous car and they were pretty good. The 588 however weren't as good for pulling away, they gave a fair amount of slip under acceleration. Having now driven 21000 miles on them and needing to replace. I won't be buying them again mainly because of that slippage as I didn't have confidence in pulling away and partly because I'm now is a position to afford Premium Tyres and have opted for Goodyear Efficientgrip Performance 2's. Other than that they handled everything I threw at them. Summer, winter, wet, dry, ice, snow with the appropriate driving they were fine. They have lasted 2 and a half years (21000 Miles) not a bad tyre by any means and if budget is a concern then you can't really go wrong.

Dunlop SportMaxx RT 2 rated 70% while driving a Mazda MX5 2.0 Manual
Driving on a combination of roads for 1200 spirited miles
A mixed bag these ones. I'll start with the positives:

Survived two mixed weather track days. Although conditions meant pushing hard was never an option, most road tyres show some shoulder wear in track conditions, but these held up well. In Cold / Greasy conditions, they clearly performed better than the same car on semi-slicks and the handling was predictable, consistent and controllable. Oversteer was progressive and correctable.

Next, in very very very heavy rain conditions on the motorway (and I mean, can't even see the car in front kinda wet), they performed very well. Very little if any aquaplaning, resistance to it was good. Felt calm and steady over standing water and in damp conditions it felt like the tyre was keyed into the road.

Lastly, country road driving in damp / changeable conditoins, also excellent, very reliable grip, even when pressing on.

So what about the downsides... well, theres a few:

1) very odd steering characteristics off centre and on / off throttle. The car changes direction slightly on and off throttle, a behaviour I've only seen when tyres were different brands, or one was hugely over / under inflated. It suggests that all four tyres may not be perfectly the same dimensionally. It lends an oddly floaty feeling just off centre when driving on roads.

2) very very very firm. For a road tyre, the carcass stiffness is significant. These are actually about as stiff as a set of Nankang AR1 track tyres, and significantly harder than the likes of a classic P zero. For a road tyre this makes it quite uncomfortable. It certainly feels "sporty" but over all but perfect roads, its quite uncomfortable.

3) I have no data yet on how these will perform under hard driving in dry conditions, so will need to report back once I've had a chance to do so.

Uniroyal RainSport 5 rated 67% while driving a Alfa Romeo 147
Driving on mostly country roads for 20000 average miles
I had always Continental sport contact in my alfa romeo 147, when Continental stopped to produce sport size 215/45/17, I chose uniroyal rainsport 5 as a fast alternative, uniroyal are good tires, beautiful, but i lost my handling, braking, the grip, always comparing to contisports, for daily and normal driving, I really enjoy uniroyal, but my next tyres will be michelin pilot sport 5 or good year assymetric 6.

Sailun Atrezzo ZSR rated 63% while driving a Vauxhall Corsa D
Driving on a combination of roads for 20000 spirited miles
I have a bit mixed impression relating to Sailun ZSR tyres. They offer surprisingly good grip on dry tarmac, even if cornering hard, but can be inconsistent on wet roads, especially on smooth tarmac. They are acceptably noisy. Rolling resistance can be noticed at petrol station. But still within acceptance. It could be a cheap and good tyre, unfortunately high wear level is pulling down overall impression because 20k miles does not impress at all - near legal limit already. But to be honest, I have seen worse results at much higher price. Would I buy these again? I would consider for just rolling wheels for sure, but not for the pulling wheels.
